Operating Guidelines

The purpose of the Student Union Art Exhibition Program is to display a variety of art media and provide the Union with challenging and interesting work, encouraging an aesthetic understanding while also providing artists the opportunity to show their work and to learn more about what is involved in producing an exhibition. All exhibitions and gallery receptions are free and open to the public during normal building hours.

  1. Eligibility
    1. Artists are eligible in the following priority order:
      1. Full-time Boise State students who have never displayed their art in the Student Union
      2. Part-time Boise State students who have never displayed their art in the Student Union
      3. Alumni of Boise State who have never displayed their art in the Student Union
      4. Students or alumni who have previously displayed their art in the Student Union
      5. Boise State faculty and/or staff
      6. Traveling exhibitions
      7. Other professional or student artists not included in any of the above
  2. Categories
    1. Exhibitions will be booked with the Art Advisory Board following the above priority order.
  3. Location
    1. Artwork is primarily displayed in the SUB Gallery and the Special Events Center Lobby. Other areas may be considered as deemed appropriate and timely by the Art Advisory Board and Student Union staff.
  4. Regulations and Restrictions
    1. The Student Union reserves the right to review and screen, prior to opening, any exhibition or part thereof that may be considered inappropriate for public display.
    2. With proper coordination prior to the installation date artwork (except free-standing pieces) may be suspended from ceiling tracks with fishing line or wire. Any other method of hanging must be approved, in advance, by the Student Union Fine Arts Manager.
    3. The lighting of the exhibition is handled by building facilities staff due to safety issues.
  5. Scheduling Procedures
    1. Any person desiring to display art must submit an exhibition proposal to the Student Union Fine Arts Manager.
    2. The Manager will:
      1. Review the Artist's work with the Art Advisory Board for approval
      2. Secure a location and time for the exhibition and reception
      3. Act as the main contact for the artist throughout the scheduling and exhibition processes.
  6. Gallery Expectations
    1. The Artist will provide:
      1. Art work for the exhibition, which is ready to hang/install, to be on display for the entire exhibition
      2. Biographical information on the Artist(s) and their art for promotional purposes
      3. An itemized list of selected artwork to include title, media, sale price and artist's name
      4. A digital image of up to 5 examples of the artists work for promotional purposes
      5. Up to 50 addresses for the purpose of sending exhibitions announcements
      6. 15% of the revenue from the sales of any art displayed in the exhibition. A check should be made payable to the Boise State University Foundation (GR013).
    2. The Student Union will provide:
      1. A designated time to display art in the Student Union Gallery
      2. Parking validation during drop off and pick up of art
      3. Labor to install and take down the exhibition
      4. University Insurance to cover the sale value of the art work on display
      5. Normal building security for the exhibition
      6. Design and layout of the announcement to advertise the exhibition
      7. Printing and postage costs of the announcement within budget specifications
      8. Public service announcements and press releases on the exhibition
      9. Vinyl signage on the title wall in the gallery space
      10. Parking reservations based on availability during the reception
      11. Financial support for a reception for the artist(s)
      12. Live music during the reception (if deemed appropriate)
